The documentary on Karzai is part of a series called ‘KRO’s Reporter International’, a series of documentaries made by the KRO, a Dutch broadcasting station. The series consists of a set of four documentaries, each about a ‘friend’ of the Netherlands. Other ‘friends’ are for example Vladimir Poetin, Silvio Berlusconi and Sepp Blatter.
Today’s episode will examine ‘friend’ Hamid Karzai. It will focus on his personality and his link with the Netherlands. Themes that will be discussed include the guerilla war, Karzai’s relationship with the warlords and the Afghan presidential elections of 2009.
Willem van de Put will be asked what the consequences of Karzai’s presidency will be for the development in Afghanistan. With over sixteen years of experience in Afghanistan, HealthNet TPO has witnessed at least three radical changes of power and civil wars at close quarters. Experience has taught us that often the local government is a major player when it comes to (re)building health care.
The documentary on Karzai will be broadcasted Monday 31 May, at 9.00 p.m. on the Dutch channel Nederland 1. It can also be viewed on the internet, on www.uitzendinggemist.nl.

We work on rebuilding health care in areas disrupted by war, disasters and poverty. This process of 'rebuilding' starts with healthcare. In war- or calamity areas people face the immense task to rebuild their country in a devastated surrounding, whereas they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional impact of conflicts.
By using health as a goal and a means, we work together with local communities on the rehabiliation of people and the country.
