In the year 2000, all members of the United Nations (UN) reached an agreement regarding development aid. In 2015, significant progress in the fields of poverty, education, health and environment is targeted. This agreement has been elaborated into eight concrete goals, the ‘Millennium Development Goals’ (MDG):
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development
Each year the progress of the objectives is measured and reported internationally. In the Netherlands, the MDG’s are also a central topic in the development aid policy. HealthNet TPO has been particularly active in combating child and maternal mortality (goal 4 and 5) and disease control (goal 6). For this we educate midwives and distribute mosquito nets. Click on the links below to read more about what HealthNet TPO contributes to achieving the MDG’s.
MDG 4: Reduce the under-five mortality rate by two-thirds
With the implementation of mother and child care programmes, HealthNet TPO is supporting vaccination programmes for children, to ensure more children are protected against diseases such as malaria, measles and tetanus. Therefore several public and private health clinics are provided with the right vaccins and HealthNet TPO seeks to create greater awareness for the importance of vaccinations. These projects take place in among others Afghanistan, Burundi and Cambodia. From a broader perspective HealthNet TPO also contributes to this goal by working on disease control. Reducing diseases like malaria, HIV/Aids and measles will also combat child mortality. Click here for more information on this Millennium Development Goal
MDG 5: Reduce maternal mortality by three quarters and gain universal access to reproductive health
HealthNet TPO is one of the twenty participants in the MDG5 Meshwork for Improving Maternal Health. We are working toward improving reproductive health by implementing various maternal care and child care programmes in Afghanistan, Burundi and Cambodia. We aim to improve access to prenatal and obstetric care. In these countries there is a critical shortage of midwives. Since 2002 HealthNet TPO educates midwives, which in Afghanistan has even led to a national training programme, recognized by the Afghan government. Additionally, more partnerships are stimulated between public and private clinics. This means more people gain access to the needed care, and if necessary, at home. MDG 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
A healthy foundation is required for (re) building a country after conflict. HealthNet TPO contributes to this significantly by focusing on disease control: we provide education about the dangers of HIC/Aids, in for example Afghanistan, Burundi, Cambodia, Nepal and DR Congo. Projects that aim combating malaria are supported by HealthNet TPO in (among others) Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sudan. A major project here was the distribution of over 311.000 mosquito nets in Afghanistan and Nepal. Click here for more information on this Millennium Development Goal
We work on rebuilding health care in areas disrupted by war, disasters and poverty. This process of 'rebuilding' starts with healthcare. In war- or calamity areas people face the immense task to rebuild their country in a devastated surrounding, whereas they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional impact of conflicts.
By using health as a goal and a means, we work together with local communities on the rehabiliation of people and the country.
