Mental health and psychosocial support programme
Since 2000 this programme works on community based mental health care and proper referral to mental health services within the existing health system. In 13 provinces, it addresses refugee care and reintegration, the consequences of war and violence, and the integration of mental health care into the health system. This has resulted in the establishment of 10 mental health clinics in district hospitals and the integration of psychosocial assistance at a community level or in health services of the Ministry of National Solidarity. Community involvement is realized through health committees that are involved in the planning of their health facilities. Read more...
As a result of its turbulent history, Burundi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world: 68% of the population lives on less than one dollar a day, and life expectancy does not exceed the age of 58. Since 2000, HealthNet TPO has been actively working in 14 of the 17 Burundi provinces, supporting the development of the health system and focusing on integrating mental health care in the National Basic Care Package. Special attention has been given to support for reintegrating refugees, children and other vulnerable groups.
