Rwanda

The reconstruction of Rwanda after the civil war and the genocide of 1994 is a long and slow process. The region of the Great Lakes in Africa is characterized by instability, latent and open conflicts, both internal and across borders. The health sector is still not recovered from the genocide. There is a lack of staff and a good infrastructure especially in the field of psychological assistance. There is an urgent need for support in setting up training of workers in all professions and in particular at local level. HealthNet TPO gives support to the training of animateurs, nurses and the capacity building of the provincial health care in three districts in the centre of the country: Muhanga, Ruhango and Kamonyi. The program was started in 2008.

Programs

Training on local level: Healthnet TPO has been in Rwanda since 1995. Initially we supported at the request of the Ministry of Health a project aimed at training of nursing staff., together with the local authorities HealthNet TPO set up a strategic ten-year plan on training and management of nursing staff are central.

Since the beginning of 2008 Healthnet TPO has launched a special project in three districts in the centre of the country. To meet the enormous need for psychological assistance, Healthnet TPO has established a training programme for at least 800 animateurs at local level and more than 40 nurses in 14 health centres. The training is aimed to be accepting and recognition, the first reception and after the transit of people with mental health problems. In the long term is also used by a psychologist for district. The program is carried out in close cooperation with the Ministry of Health in Rwanda and the local partner Caritas-Kabgayi.

About HealthNet TPO

We work on rebuilding health care in areas disrupted by war, disasters and poverty. This process of 'rebuilding' starts with healthcare. In war- or calamity areas people face the immense task to rebuild their country in a devastated surrounding, whereas they suffer from poverty, diseases and the emotional impact of conflicts.

By using health as a goal and a means, we work together with local communities on the rehabiliation of people and the country.
