Number of households insured is growing fast

In the newsletter of September 2010, we informed you about the Community Based Health Insurance (CBHI) project in Cambodia. With the help of the Eureka/Achmea Foundation, Rabobank and HealthNet TPO, the health system in Cambodia is becoming more accessible. Since the last newsletter, 292 new households are insured against high health expenditures and the total number of insured households is now 439 (4.4%).

The number of insured households is different per area due to various social economic status of the population. In for example Potil, 3.4% of the households are insured. Many people in Potil receive reimbursement of their health expenditures from the government Health Equity Fund. Variety is also seen between the villages Angekeasdey with 26% and Prey Pnov with only 1% of the households insured. Angekeasdey is an isolate village with no private practice and two active community health workers while Prey Pnov is more “urban” with several private practices. 

Till the end of October CBHI covered 1701 health center consults of which 77 are referred to the districts hospital and six to the second referral hospital in Phnom Penh. Of the health center consults the following consults were related to mother care:  three were deliveries, 32 antenatal care visits, and 24 family planning visits. In the coming period we will prepare the extension to six other health center coverage areas. Another very important point of attention is to obtain donor funding for the CBHI project in 2011.
