Volunteer position: Advisor to the Board

HealthNet TPO is looking for a volunteer to provide professional advise and support to the Board and the Executive Director to further increase their efficiency and effectiveness.

About us:
Even the most vulnerable people, traumatized by war and violence, have the inner strength to (re)build a better future for themselves. The mission of Health Net is to facilitate and strengthen communities and help them regain control and maintain their health and well-being.  

We use local ‘knowledge and resources’, scientific research and evidence based interventions to strengthen local communities. We focus on low resourced communities whether in a fragile state or mid-income state or even a wealthy state. 

We are proud to learn constantly from these local communities. They show us the most effective and sustainable ways to adapt and integrate our international scientific knowledge to their local circumstances.  This way local communities ultimately become independent of our help. 

Our core areas of expertise are health systems strengthening, community systems strengthening, disease control, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and psycho-social support.  

Your role:
We are seeking an dedicated volunteer who is committed to giving time and effort to play a critical role in providing professional advise and support to the HealthNet Board and the Executive Director. Tasks include:  

Advise on topics such as: 

•    How to ensure statutory and legally compliance by the Board 

•    Formalising the role of the Board and specific roles and responsibilities of each Board member. 

•    Formalising performance standards of the Board  

•    Tracking Board performance and identify gaps 

•    Linking up: organisational purpose, goals, KPIs, values - and document this.
 

Support topics include: 

•    Create a set of criteria/guidelines to avoid conflict of interest when support (paid or voluntary) is drawn from networks of staff & Board members 

•    Organise all organisational documentation in a systematic way, so that it is accessible at all times and to ensure transparency 

•    Prepare Board meetings 

•    Organise preparatory Board meeting documentation 

•    Take minutes of the Board meetings

 

You have/ are:  

Education 

•    A higher education level in a relevant field. 
 

Experience 

•    Similar experience providing support to an organisation’s governing body  

•    Experience with NGO governance matters 

•    Thorough working knowledge of NGOs 

•    Board experience is preferred.

 

Specific Skills  

•    Excellent advisory, interpersonal and communication skills  

•    Thinks strategically 

•    Inspires, persuades, influences and gains other’s support for ideas or actions 

•    Information gathering and monitoring skills 

•    Problem analysis and problem solving skills
 

Other 

•    Sufficient time to fulfil the role (monthly board meetings, hands-on support as board and for area of responsibility)
